An answer you can act on, not a second opinion
IT Consulting Services
Bring us the technical decision you keep postponing — a rebuild, a migration, a vendor choice, a security question nobody owns. We read the systems, talk to the people running them, and come back with the options, the trade-offs and a recommendation you are free to reject.
What does IT consulting actually deliver?
IT consulting is paid, independent technical judgement: someone experienced reads your systems, your team and your plans, and tells you what to do about them. The deliverable is something you can act on — an architecture you can build to, a shortlist you can buy from, a remediation plan you can staff — not a deck that restates the problem back to you.
It is worth buying when getting the decision wrong costs more than the advice, and when nobody inside the company can answer it without a stake in the outcome. Once the decision is made you can take the plan anywhere, including away from us. If you would rather we ran the work, the same people deliver it as custom software development, as a dedicated team, or as outstaffed engineers working under your own leads.
What we consult on
These questions account for most of the engagements we are asked to run. Each ends in a decision rather than a survey of the industry.
Technology strategy
Where your systems need to be in a couple of years, what it costs to get there, and in what order. Written so a non-technical board can approve it and an engineer can build from it.
Architecture review
We read the codebase and the infrastructure and tell you what breaks first as you grow, what is expensive to keep alive, and what is perfectly fine despite looking untidy.
Build, buy or integrate
Most problems do not need custom software. We compare the real options for your case — including the ones that leave us with less work — and show what each choice forecloses.
Cloud and infrastructure
Sizing, migration routes and the running costs nobody quotes at the start. Our cloud and DevOps engineers do the estimating, so the numbers come from people who operate these platforms.
Security posture
A structured look at how exposed you are: access, data handling, dependencies, deployment. You get what to fix first, what can wait, and what was never a real risk.
Delivery process
Late releases are rarely a tooling problem. We look at how work is scoped, estimated and handed over, and where it sits idle between people.
Team and hiring plan
Which roles you need, in what order, and which are worth hiring permanently rather than contracting. Sometimes the finding is that you do not need more people.
In-house IT lead, external consulting, or a fractional CTO?
All three buy you technical judgement. They differ in how fast you get it, how much context it carries, and what you are left with afterwards.
| In-house IT lead | External consulting | Fractional CTO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best when | The technical questions never stop | One decision is blocking you now | You need leadership but not a full-time salary |
| Depth of context | Deepest — lives with the consequences | Broad, drawn from many similar systems | Deep over time, part-time in practice |
| Independence | Invested in past decisions | No stake in what was built before | Somewhere between the two |
| Time to start | Months of hiring | Days | Weeks |
| What you are left with | Permanent capability | A documented decision and a plan | A standing decision-maker |
| Cost shape | Salary and benefits, indefinitely | Scoped, and it ends | Monthly retainer |
How an engagement runs
Five steps, with the boundary and the end date agreed before we start. At every point you should know what you are paying for and what you will be left holding.
1
Scoping call
Free, and usually an hour. You describe the decision in front of you; we tell you whether consulting is the right instrument and roughly what settling it would take.
2
Discovery
We read code, configuration, contracts and documentation, then interview the people who actually run the systems. Most of what matters comes out of the interviews rather than the documents.
3
Findings
What we found, ranked by what it costs you, kept separate from what we recommend. You should be able to disagree with our recommendation and still use the findings.
4
Options and a roadmap
Two or three routes with the trade-offs spelled out: cost, elapsed time, risk, and what each one rules out later. We say which we would choose, and why.
5
Support through the decision
We stay available while you take it to the board, the vendor or the team — and we can run the resulting work if you want us to, or hand it to whoever will.
What you get at the end
All of it written to be usable without us in the room — including by whoever inherits the decision after you.
- A written report. What we found, what it means and what we would do about it, in language you can forward to a board without translating it first.
- A ranked risk list. Ordered by what each item costs you if it lands, not by how interesting it is technically. Cheap fixes are marked as cheap.
- A sequenced roadmap. Work in order, with dependencies and rough effort attached, so you can fund it in stages instead of committing to all of it at once.
- The options we rejected. And the reasoning behind rejecting them. This is the part that stops the same debate being re-run from scratch in six months.
- A working session with your team. We walk your engineers and managers through how we got there, so the decision holds up after we leave.
Describe the decision. We will tell you whether it needs consulting, and what settling it would take.
The scoping call is free of charge.
